Our Work: Waltham Forest - Mosques and Young People

A short piece of research was done in the London Borough of Waltham Forest in early 2009 on the relationship between mosques and young people in Waltham Forest.

The research was funded by Waltham Forest Council to understand the dynamics between mosques and young people in order carry out the Government's 'prevent' work in the borough. The research highlighted that the 'prevent' agenda was not undestood by the mosques, they raised concern the Governments prevent work would only serve to further isolate the Muslim community and a way of intelligence gathering. Building trust and rapport was extremely crucial in carrying out this piece of research and achieved in building in roads to begin discussion/ consultation on doing further work with the Muslim community.

Another important finding coming out of the report was through the focus groups conducted with young people. All male youth groups were affected by gangs and gang violence in the borough and felt this would remain a ongoing issue they would have to combat on their own.

All the recommendations of the report are being built into Waltham Forest Council's action/ delivery plan for 2009/10.
